Breitling Navitimer 1: The Aviator's Watch
The classic Breitling Navitimer 1 is legendary among aviators and aviation enthusiasts. Its circular slide-rule bezel allows all navigation operations to be calculated in the air. The famed slide rule on the Navitimer goes back to the company founder Willy Breitling, who commissioned the mathematician Marcel Robert to develop it. Launched on the market in 1952, the watch quickly achieved cult status—so much so that when connoisseurs speak of a Breitling, they normally mean the Navitimer.
Characteristics of the Breitling Navitimer 1
Along with its style-defining slide rule, the Breitling Navitimer 1 has a number of other unmistakable characteristics. The continuous fluted edge on the bezel ensures that you can get a good grip on it. And to ensure that the Arabic numerals and all the functions on the chronograph are easily readable, the Navitimer 1 is relatively large, with a diameter of at least 43 millimeters; you can even get models with a diameter of 46 millimeters, or smaller chronographs with a diameter of 30 or 41 millimeters. The cases are usually made of stainless steel and are sometimes complemented with precious rose gold. The range of models is complemented by the differently colored dials and bracelets made of stainless steel, and smooth or structured leather straps with or without contrasting seams.
