Panerai Luminor—a Precise Watch under Water and on Land
As one of the most successful lines from the Italian Panerai brand, the Panerai Luminor has been setting standards under water and on land since the 1940s. It owes its name to the intense luminosity of its large dial, which together with the striking luminous hands guarantees optimum readability in every situation. Panerai patented this highly fluorescent substance in 1949 under the name “Luminor”. Today, it also stands for the most extensive and diverse line of Panerai watches.
Technical Perfection in the Service of the Royal Navy
The Luminor watch is the result of a commission for Panerai from the Italian Royal Navy at the end of the 1940s. Panerai was asked to produce even more robust and water-resistant watches for combat swimmers and they did just that. To seal the case almost hermetically, Panerai used a technical trick on the crown and used a protective bridge to make the case more water-resistant. This continues to be one of the hallmarks of the watch line today.
Other style-defining and unmistakable characteristics of the Panerai Luminor are the cushion-shaped, slightly angular cases made of extremely durable and corrosion-resistant steel and the black “sandwich” dial, on which four large Arabic numerals alternate with line hour markers. All of these features make this watch easy to read in every situation.
The specially developed movements with the particularly long power reserve of up to eight days and a mechanism for stopping the balance for precise setting are technical quality features of the Panerai Luminor. In addition, some of the calibers feature highly practical functions such as a date display, a GMT function to indicate the time in a second time zone, a day/night indication on the small seconds dial and an indication of the remaining power reserve. In some versions, these masterpieces can be identified by the sapphire crystal case-back in a case that is water-resistant to at least ten bars.
